Parakey deal bridges gap for Facebook
Facebook has bought a site that suggests its ambitions reach beyond the internet and on to the computer desktop where it would compete directly with Microsoft Windows.
The social networking site is rumoured to have beaten Google to buy Parakey, a site which has not yet launched but aims to be a web operating system that can act as a bridge between online and offline content. It is Facebook's first acquisition and the company declined to give any financial details of the transaction.
Parakey was built by Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt, co-founders of Firefox, the second most widely used web browser after Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It is thought to have received seed funding from Google-backers Sequoia Capital in early 2005 and subsequently O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures.
From a web browser users can view and modify all of their files and decide what they want to display to the rest of the world. They can also update their Parakey page offline.
Mr Ross wrote on his blog: "The project remains very much alive, and since we will be working to port the concepts and technology to Facebook, it will remain stealthy."
In May Facebook opened up its site for developers to create applications that work within the site, a little like Microsoft did with its Windows operating system in the 1990s. This acquisition could help it bridge the gap between its online platform and the computer desktop.
Duncan Riley wrote on the highly respected technology blog TechCrunch: "Imagine that in two to five years time Facebook has become the No. 1 destination on the web.
"Facebook as a Web operating system (OS) is the leader in online storage, online applications, email, blogging and of course social networking.
All previous Facebook applications work under Facebook OS, but they work more like Windows does today; Facebook has become your desktop and not just an internet site.
The Facebook Paint application substitutes Photoshop, Facebook Email is a superior offering to Outlook, Facebook Office (Facebook having acquired either [start-up online office suites] Thinkfree or Zoho) provides the market leading word processing and spreadsheet platform.
"It might sound far-fetched, but this is exactly the position Facebook wants to be in and the direction they are headed."

Five polyps found, but Dubya's OK
Sunday, July 22nd 2007, 4:00 AM
Doctors found five small polyps, but President Bush will be fine.
Presidential power was transferred to Vice President Cheney for two hours yesterday while doctors performed a routine colonoscopy on President Bush.
The doctors found five small polyps in President Bush's colon.
The growths were sent for tests. Results are expected to be back by Tuesday, but none "appeared worrisome," said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel.
President Bush used the disability clause of the Constitution to transfer power to Cheney at 7:16 a.m. while he was sedated during the procedure, which lasted 31 minutes.
It was only the third time the clause had been invoked. Bush used it during a similar screening in 2002, and President Ronald Reagan turned over power to George H.W. Bush during surgery in 1985.
The vice president was at his home on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, 30 miles from Washington.
Stanzel said Cheney had no reason to take any official action during the transfer - but the transfer was fodder for comedians.
"Good luck getting that power back," Jay Leno quipped on his Friday night show. "By noon tomorrow, he would have invaded Iran, Syria and Malibu."
Bush retook power at 9:21 a.m.
Stanzel said that after the procedure, the President spent part of the morning playing with his dogs, and planned to take a bike ride yesterday afternoon.
"The President was in good humor," he said.
The colonoscopy was a regular examination recommended after doctors found other polyps in Bush's colon during scans in 1998 and in 1999.
Polyps are usually benign, but can grow and become cancerous if they are not removed.
